When Coronavirus hit the US in March 2020, the DoD put a temporary travel ban on troop movements to prevent the spread of the disease. This impacted thousands of military families who had PCS orders and were scheduled to move. The DoD created an Exception to Policy (ETP) request that could grant families permission to move in specific situations such as emergencies, essential personnel, or financial hardship.

By summer, as cases began to diminish in some states, the DoD announced that it would allow families to move without an ETP request, as long as both the departing location and the receiving destination were in the “green” category of safe locations with reduced numbers of cases. If either your current installation or the one you have orders to are in the “red” category, you will still need to request an ETP to complete your move. But how do you know which installations are in the red or green zone?

The DoD keeps an updated file here, under the title Travel Restrictions Installation Status Update. Because the number of cases in each state change regularly, the DoD updates their list weekly. We encourage you to check their site for the most up-to-date info.

To keep things simple, we are listing the military installations that are currently GREEN. These are the ones NOT requiring an Exception to Policy before you can move or travel there. If either your duty station or the one on your orders is not listed here, then you need to request the ETP before you move.

UPDATED August 21: The DoD has lifted travel restrictions at 94 of 231 Installations (40%):
