Out and About Fort Leavenworth – Fall Edition

Fall in Fort Leavenworth is our personal favorite. The leaves change to burnt orange, the weather is cooler, and there are tons of outdoor events to enjoy.  While this list is not complete, it’s a good start! AROUND TOWN

SEPTEMBER

  • Grinter Farms Sunflower Patch

NOW!!!! The sunflowers of Grinter Farms are in bloom and are a must see. Get your family photos updated at this must-see farm with 40 acres of sunflowers. More information can be found on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/GrinterFarms/

  • Alive After 5 September Hometown Welcome

September 7th from 5-7pm on Leavenworth’s Main Street. The Leavenworth merchants are putting on a welcome for all the new families in the community. Bring the family and enjoy the food and beverages.

  • 2017 Wild Hog BBQ

September 8th and 9th from 8am-10pm at the 200 block of Cherokee. A family friendly festival with vendors, live music, food, face painters and more!

  • 7th Annual Run/Walk for the Fallen

September 16th at 8am at the Resiliency Center on Fort Leavenworth. FMWR is hosting this 3-mile event that is pet and stroller family. Registration starts at 6:30 am and opening ceremonies are at 8am, This is a free event to remember those that are gone but not forgotten.

  • Welcome to Kansas Luncheon

The Fort Leavenworth Spouses’ Club is hosting its 1st luncheon on September 20th from 10:30am- 1:30pm at the Frontier Conference Center. Arrive early to shop with the vendors and enjoy learning about your new duty station. Don’t forget to sign up for the sub clubs (wine club, book club, etc) and really find your niche while you’re here.

  • Cider Hill Family Orchard

Late September-early October. The orchard is open and its u-pick apple season. Take the wagon out to the 38 acres of orchard and start picking! Plan to come back closer to Halloween to pick a pumpkin and enjoy hot apple cider.

  • Oktoberfest

September 29th from 5-9pm at Merritt Lake. Squeeze into those lederhosen and bring the family for live Polka music, beer, food, bounce houses, hayrides, and more!

OCTOBER

  • Mother Son Super Hero Dance

October 1st from 1pm-3pm at the Riverfront Community Center in Leavenworth. Pop on those capes and come for an afternoon of games, music, dancing, and food. Must register for event at www.lvks.org.

  • Weston Apple Festival

October 7th and 8th from 10am-5pm in historic Weston, MO. Events kick off Saturday morning with a parade. The festival boasts 60 art and craft booths, a food court, pony rides, pumpkin painting, straw maze, and much more.

  • Fire Department House Open House

October 11th from 4:30 pm-6 pm at the Fire Station on Biddle.

  • Kansas City Renaissance Festival

Now through October 15th, Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-7pm in Bonner Springs. Knights jousting, face painting, turkey legs as big as your hand, shops, reenactments, and much more await you. Kids under 5 are free and military discounts apply!

  • The Haunted Tour

October 21st and October 28th starting at 6pm at the Old Disciplinary Barracks. Hear the tale of The Lady in Black, walk the Rookery and learn of the most haunted buildings on post. This tour is a bucket list item for families stationed at Fort Leavenworth!

  • Family Fun Night

October 28th from 5-7pm at C.W. Parker Carousel Museum. A hot dog combo meal includes dinner and unlimited rides on the carousel. Carnival games, face painting, and a piñata will also be on site for an additional fee.

NOVEMBER

  • Holiday Bazaar and Flea Market

November 4th from 8am-4pm at Riverfront Community Center. Get an early start on your holiday shopping at this free event.

  • Veterans Day Parade

November 11th at 10:30am in downtown Leavenworth. This annual event honors the 25 million Veterans in the U.S. Come watch the oldest Veterans Day observance in the nation and largest parade west of the Mississippi.

  • Christmas on the River

November 17th from 6pm-9m. A children’s choir, Santa open house, train rides, food, and fireworks are scheduled through the evening. There will be a shuttle service running to take families to and from the venue. Check out http://visitplatte.com/event/christmas-on-the-river/ for more details on the shuttle.

  • Mayor’s Tree Lighting

No official date has been released, but this event happens mid-November each year. The city of Leavenworth will have the Mayor light up the tree and a small parade will all kick off Christmas.

  • Thanksgiving- November 23rd

The Fort Leavenworth DFAC does a special Thanksgiving spread for families not wanting to cook or single soldiers craving a home cooked meal! Check the Ft. Leavenworth FMWR page for details!

GET OUT OF TOWN!

OVERLAND PARK, KS-

  • Fall Festival

September 23rd at 9am at Sante Fe Commons Park. A parade, arts and crafts, 3 concert stages, and tons of food. Need we say more? Get out and enjoy all OP Fall Fest has to offer.

  • Pumpkin Hollow

September 29-October 31st from 10am-3pm at Deanna Rose Children’s Farm. This event is perfect for kids of all ages. Corn mazes, pumpkin patch, hay slides, horse drawn wagon rides, and much more.

  • Botanical Brewfest

October 14th from 4pm-8pm at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. This event is for ages 21 and up only! 90 craft beers, food, music, games, and did we mention 90 craft beers?

  • Night of the Living Farm

Weekend of October 20th-21st and October 27th-28th from 6pm-9pm at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead. This is the perfect Halloween event for kids of all ages. There are mad science experiments, flash light scavenger hunts, a princess party, marshmallow roast and more!

  • Holiday Luminary Walk

November 24th and 25th from 5pm-9pm at the Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens. This fundraising event boasts a mile of trails by candles, holiday lights, live, hot cider, and even Santa will be on site!

KANSAS CITY, MO

  • KidsFest Kansas City

September 23rd from 10:30am-6pm at Children’s Mercy Park. Experience the largest Children’s festival in KC! Face painting, inflatables, special appearances, family zones and tons of activities are scheduled to run all day.

  • Vintage Market Days “Fall Gathering”

Sept 29th-October 1st at Zona Rosa. An   upscale, outdoor market with vintage vendors featuring art, antiques, décor, jewelry, food, and more.

  • Dogtober Fest

October 16th from 10am-4pm at Kemper Education Center Fleming Park. Join the fun and raise funds for local animal shelters. There will be a costume contest, Fun Run, dog/owner look-alike contest and much more.

  • Boo at the Zoo

October 28th and 29th from 10:30am-6pm at the Kansas City Zoo. Put on your costumes and join the animals at the Kansas City Zoo for their annual trick or treating event. There will be Halloween themed activities and events along with lots of treats.

  • KC Veteran’s Day 5K and Run

November 11th at 7:30am at Zona Rosa. “Run, walk, or roll at Kansas City’s most impactful Veterans Day event benefiting the Global War on Terror Memorial Foundation and their mission to establish a memorial on the National Mall that honors our fallen warriors, U.S. Service members, their families, and all who have supported our nation’s longest war.”

  • Chiefs Football Game

September-November at the Arrowhead Stadium. Fall brings the Eagles, Redskins, Steelers, Broncos, and Bills into town to play against the Chiefs. Snag tickets from MRW on post and enjoy!

  • Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting

November 24th at 5:30pm at Crown Center Square. The 100ft tree journeys from Oregon to Kansas City and will be lit up by Mayor James and a celebrity guest. Santa also arrives to Crown Center the same day so go early and get a visit in before the tree lighting ceremony!
