Out & About in Colorado Springs

There’s no better time to get out and enjoy Colorado Springs and Colorado than in the winter months.  The weather might be a bit chilly but there is plenty to do! Enjoy winter festivals, concerts, and family-friendly events all around town.  And find some great ideas for Valentine’s Day too!

Cirque du Soleil OVO         

Cirque du Soleil brings its newest touring show to the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs. The cast of OVO is comprised of fifty performing artists from twelve countries specializing in many acrobatic acts. Shows start Wednesday, January 18th and continue through Sunday, January 22nd.

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic

The Colorado Springs Philharmonic has several concerts at the Pikes Peak Center during the winter months for everyone to enjoy.

  • Beethoven and Tchaikovsky – Friday, January 21st, and Saturday, January 22nd
  • Divas of the 60’s – Friday, February 10th, and Saturday, February 11th
  • 007: The Music of James Bond – Friday, March 3rd, and Saturday, March 4th

Family Star Party        

The Family Star Party is presented by the Space Foundation at Space Foundation Discovery Center on Wednesday, January 25th and February 22nd at 6:30 pm. This event is a fun learning experience for the whole family and will hopefully inspire the next generation of astronomy enthusiasts. All outside activities are free to the public and discounted admission is available for those wishing to explore the Discovery Center and Science On a Sphere® inside.

Comedians

An Evening with Paula Poundstone will be performing at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center Friday, January 27th at 7:00 pm.

Rodney Carrington will be performing at the Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts on Saturday, January 28th at 7:00 pm.

22nd Annual Pikes Peak Food and Wine Expo

Come and enjoy food, wine, beer and spirits at one of the biggest and longest running food & beverage tasting events in the Pikes Peak region. Over sixty local restaurants and twelve plus beer, wine, and spirits companies will be their offering samples.  The event will be held Sunday, March 19th  from noon until 3:00 pm at the Broadmoor World Arena.

Public Ice Skating at the Broadmoor World Arena

Come in out of the cold and join us at the World Arena Ice Hall for public skating in January! Open skating is from noon to 1:00 pm on Saturdays and 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Sundays.

Colorado Springs is home to the Unites States Air Force Academy and Colorado College.  Both have sports teams that have games and meets during the winter months to include ice hockey, basketball, gymnastics, swimming and diving, and more.  For more information on team schedules go to www.goairforcefalcons.com or www.cctigers.com.   If you want to drive to Denver, you can take in a Denver Avalanche ice hockey game (www.nhl.com/avalanche) or Denver Nugget basketball game (www.nba.com/nuggets).

Manitou Springs Fruitcake Toss

Watch the fruitcakes fly in downtown Manitou Springs January 28th from 1:00 to 3:00 pm at Manitou Springs Memorial Park.  Competitions include a hand toss, Kid’s Toss, Launch, Pneumatic Gun or Canon, Team Catch and Accuracy Division. There is also a fruitcake costume competition and a fruitcake bake off. The cost of competing is a non-perishable food item to be donated to the Westside Cares Food Bank.

UllrGrass in Golden

Put on your faux fur and Viking horns for this family friendly winter music and beer fest in Golden the weekend of January 27th through January 29th.  Enjoy the UrllGrass Parade, music from local and national bluegrass musicians and local food and craft vendors.

Big Horn Sheep Day

Come to Garden of the Gods on Saturday, February 11th from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm for the 12th Annual Bighorn Sheep Day. You can look for bighorn sheep in their natural habitat through our high-power telescopes and enjoy bighorn sheep presentations.  There will be door prizes, free cookies and cider, guided nature walks, children’s activities and crafts, and live zoo animals. All activities are FREE!

Cripple Creek Ice Festival

The Cripple Creek Ice Festival is one of the most exciting times of the year in this historic gold mining town. See as 160-pound blocks of ice are transformed into this year’s theme of ‘Safari in Ice.’ Enjoy the Ice Maze, Ice Slide, Ice Martini Bar and other interactive ice sculptures for great photo opportunities and hours of fun.  There will be craft and food vendors as well.  The festival occurs during the second and third weekends of February in the town of Cripple Creek.

Pagosa Springs’ Winterfest

Enjoy an activity packed weekend that has lots of fun for the whole family.  There will be hot air balloons, a snowshoe race, Penguin Plunge into the San Juan River, sled race and more.  Activities are throughout the weekend beginning Friday, February 4th and continuing through Sunday, February 5th.

Steamboat Springs’ Winter Carnival

The carnival features ski-jumping competitions, dog-sled pulls, cross-country obstacle races, a tubing party, parade, and fireworks.  Activities start on Wednesday, February 8th and go through Sunday, February 12th around the city of Steamboat Springs.

2017 Mumbo Jumbo Gumbo Cook-Off And Mardi Gras Parade

Experience Mardi Gras and Cajun cuisine in Manitou Springs at Soda Springs Park on Saturday, February 25th from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm.  Judging and public tastings of gumbo made by professional and amateur chefs begin at approximately 10:45 am.  Stick around after the Cook-Off for the Mardi Gras Parade at 1 pm.

Ski Joring and Crystal Carnival in Leadville

Watch this unique event where fearless skiers navigate an obstacle course while being pulled by a towrope connected to a galloping horse through the middle of town! There is also a winter carnival with other snowy activities all occurring the first weekend in March.

Lovette Variety Show

Take in the comedic variety show Lovette featuring Birgitta De Pree and Hannah Rockey at the Milibo Art Theater.  The show runs February 9th through February 26th with shows at 7:30 pm Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 pm on Sundays.

All you need is Love! Tribute to the Beatles Show

The band, Yesterday, will perform an All you need is Love! Beatles tribute show.  Dressed in the Beatles attire and playing authentic instruments, it’s sure to be a good time.  The show can be seen at the Stargazers Theater and Event Center Saturday, February 11th at 8:00 pm.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Drop the kids off at the zoo while you go out with your sweetheart!  The kids will have a pizza party, make an animal-themed valentine’s craft, meet some animals up close and sleep next to animals in the Loft.  They will also eat breakfast and take a morning zoo tour as the zoo wakes up.  The event is Friday, February 10th at 6:00 pm until Saturday, February 11th at 8:00 am.

Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center

Go on a mini tour to see the resident animals and take a special tour of Chinook’s nature trail and hear the story of “The Lovers.”  Ladies will receive a rose to place at her site followed by the traditional wolf howl.  This event will be held on Sunday, February 12th from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.

Valentine’s Day Train

Take a train ride through the Royal Gorge and enjoy either lunch or dinner with your sweetheart! Tickets include a rose for your special someone and a glass of champagne or sparkling cider per guest.  Tickets can be purchased for lunch Saturday, February 11th or Sunday, February 12th at 7:30 pm or for dinner on Tuesday, February 14th at 7:00 pm.

Enchanted April

Enjoy the romantic comedy Enchanted April about post WWI society and four women on a ladies-only holiday until men upset the balance.  The show runs February 9th through February 26th at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.
